The Curator of Artists’ Moving Images,
funded by the BFI and Arts Council England, was created at the BFI in 2005. This
post was established in the recognition that despite the influence and importance
artist work has on national moving image culture, most artist material is not
being stored in purpose built environments and has never been actively collected
to this end. In response to this situation, the curator, William Fowler, is
looking to work with established artists, galleries and other bodies with similar
concerns, to acquire material for active preservation and undertake other supportive
projects such as screenings, publications and DVD releases, and thus build
and create access to a national collection of artists’ moving images.

of their work. They have standard

archive is happy to maintain a dialogue with donating artists and is also prepared
to give advice even if material is not being donated. Ordinarily, copyright
remains with the donor while a viewing tape is made available for education
purposes and possible public exhibition. The archive holds variety of artist
material received in 2002 when the original holders, the East and West Midlands
Arts Boards, folded.

The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales welcomes
new communities of users and is very interested in work by artists either born

have a standard deposit agreement but can be flexible. Normally the agreement
allows public access to the donated material on the premises and enables inclusion
of the material in archive organised community film shows and other awareness-raising
activities. Staff are very happy to remain in touch with donating artists. There
is also the potential for taking on extraneous related material into another
appropriate section of the National Library of Wales.

that is created by Scots or that reflects Scottish culture. The practicalities of individually
tailored contracts are currently developing as the archive works with the Arts
Council to accession Lottery funded artist's work. They have worked very
hard to research and preserve the collected work of the artist filmmaker, Margaret
Tait.

The South East Film and Video Archive is keen to obtain
original source material from artists working in the South East, whether contemporary
or historical. Ideally
supported with documentation (particularly in the case of installation work)
and even undertaking an 'oral history' interview with the artist, the archive
seeks to look after and support material but also, through its presence, stimulate
and inspire others working in the region. Artists would retain ownership
of work but the archive reserves the right to include material in non-profit
public events and other similar uses, e.g. teaching and the archive's online
catalogue.

SWFTA have an open-minded
and enthusiastic attitude to artist work that goes beyond care and conservation. They are keen to work with artists
on creative projects, whether as a starting point for research or for using
archival material as found footage. The archive accepts material that
is of and about the South West but they may also be interested in less explicitly
related material made by artists in the region. Donations agreements
can be tailored not just to an artist but to their individual pieces. Any
technical work relating to commercial interests would incur costs.

any material from its geographical remit but stipulates that a viewing copy must

As part of its ongoing development, the Yorkshire
Film Archive is looking to create a strategy for collecting and preserving moving
image material made by artists, with particular reference to the Yorkshire region. Plans
to develop specialist expertise are being investigated in 2005. After checking
the content and condition of material, YFA will agree deposit terms with the
artist before acquisition and advise on conservation needs if necessary. Viewing
copies will be available for study and research at the archive’s facilities
in York. The archive is keen to identify artists’ documentation material
including visual records, installation information, publications, etc., and
assist in finding appropriate storage. Public presentation would only
be possible by permission from the artist.
